Mentalyc’s FREE Protective Factors Worksheet equips therapists with a valuable tool to help clients identify their inner strengths and build resilience in the face of adversity.

The Power Within

Resilience is the ability to adapt and recover from difficult experiences. This worksheet guides clients in exploring the protective factors that contribute to their resilience:

  • Personal Strengths: Values, talents, and personality traits that help you navigate challenges.
  • Social Support System: Strong relationships with supportive family, friends, or communities.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to identify and implement solutions to overcome obstacles.
  • Positive Attitude: An optimistic outlook that helps you focus on finding meaning and growth in difficult situations.

Why Our Protective Factors Worksheet is Essential

  • Empowerment: Helps clients identify their existing strengths and resources for coping with challenges.
  • Building Confidence: Encourages self-compassion and fosters a belief in one’s ability to overcome adversity.
  • Promoting Growth: Provides a foundation for clients to develop new coping mechanisms and build resilience over time.

What is the Protective Factors worksheet?

The protective factors worksheet is a two-page table set covering five areas: Identify Personal Strengths, Support System, Healthy Behaviors, Coping Skills and Access to Resources. Each area has a worked example row, then blank rows under a Your Turn section for the client to complete.

How to use the Protective Factors worksheet

Send it home as homework once you have filled one row together in session. Start with Identify Personal Strengths, since a client who cannot name a strength will stall on the later tables. The Support System table asks for named people, not categories: a best friend, a colleague, and what each one actually does. Your clients can leave rows blank, and a blank column is worth more than a filled one here, because it shows you where support is thin.
