What is the How to Apologize worksheet?

The how to apologize worksheet moves one incident through five numbered steps. It opens at Step 1: Reflect on the Situation and closes at Step 5: Follow Through on your Commitment. Between them it names six elements of an apology and asks the client to draft one containing all of them.

How to use the How to Apologize worksheet

Use this sheet both in session and as homework. Do Step 1 in session, since Why do you think you took those actions? tends to stall when a client is still defending the incident. Your clients can draft the apology at home, where the six elements are easier to work through slowly. Come back to Step 4: Anticipate their Response together, because rehearsing a refusal is what stops an apology being a demand for forgiveness.
