What is The Four Horsemen & Their Antidotes worksheet?

The four horsemen and their antidotes worksheet pairs each destructive communication pattern with its replacement. Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness and Stonewalling are defined with a spoken example each, then matched to antidotes such as Take Responsibility and Self-Soothing. The pairing is the point rather than the labels.

How to use The Four Horsemen & Their Antidotes worksheet

Use it both in session and as homework, and go across the rows rather than down the column. Each horseman sits beside its antidote for a reason: naming Contempt without offering Appreciation and Respect leaves a couple with a diagnosis and no move. Ask each partner to mark their own pattern, never their partner’s. Your clients can practice one antidote between sessions, which is more realistic than four.

Two printable pages laid out as a two-column table. The left column names each of the four horsemen with a definition and a real spoken example. Those run from You never listen to me to Wow you are so reliable. The right column gives the antidote, with a replacement line to say instead, such as You’re right, I wasn’t listening.
