What is the Goal Breakdown worksheet?

The goal breakdown worksheet turns one goal into dated tasks. It asks for My Goal and a due date, why the goal matters, then Potential Obstacles and Potential Solutions side by side. A four-column table lists each task with the time it needs and when it is allocated.

How to use the Goal Breakdown worksheet

Use it both in session and as homework, starting from the worked example rather than a blank sheet. Page one shows a saving goal broken into three tasks, which makes the size of a task obvious in a way that instructions do not. Fill the obstacles column before the task list, since an obstacle named late usually stops the plan. Your clients can complete the Allocated Time column last, because a task without a date is a wish.

Two printable pages. Page one is a completed example: a five thousand dollar savings goal with its due date, reasons, three obstacles, three solutions and three dated tasks. Page two is the blank version, headed Your Turn. It repeats the same fields: goal, due date, why it matters, obstacles, solutions, and a task table with columns for time required, allocated time and completion.
