What is the “What is Forgiveness?” worksheet?

The What is Forgiveness? worksheet is a single-page handout that sets two columns side by side: What Forgiveness is, and What Forgiveness is not. Each column carries three short statements, so a client can see that letting go of anger does not require restoring the relationship. Two written exercises follow.

How to use the “What is Forgiveness?” worksheet

Send this sheet home as homework after the client has named the person they are considering forgiving. Ask them to read What Forgiveness is not first, since most clients arrive believing forgiveness means excusing the behavior. Your clients can then pick one of the two exercises, either the forgiveness letter or the visualization, and bring what they wrote to the next session. Watch for clients who choose the letter to avoid feeling anything.

The download is a one-page printable PDF. The top half explains that forgiveness means releasing anger, resentment, or thoughts of revenge, without forgetting or condoning what happened. Below that sit the two contrasting columns, three points each. The lower band holds the Exercises section: write a forgiveness letter you do not have to send, or visualize letting the resentment go.
